The 1 Thing More Important Than Your Goals

Don’t implement your goals this year until you read this!

All successful businesspeople know the importance of setting goals. Yet far too little is taught on the one thing more important that great goals, the one thing from which all goals MUST be based.

Here is an example of a wrong priority, a 2%ers top priority, and 4 keys to setting the right priorities.

The Wrong Priorities

In Luke 12:16-21, Jesus shares the parable of the rich fool, the man who had the wrong priorities (get rich, hoarde my wealth for myself, and retire).

Is gaining wealth wrong? Of course not – God desires to abundantly bless us in all ways (Deuteronomy 28:1-14). It was the reason behind the priority that was the rich fool’s problem (take life easy, eat, drink and be merry). His priority was extremely selfish comfort without God.

A 2%ers Top Priority

“Glorify the Lord with me. Let us exalt His name together.” Psalm 34:3

As many of you already know, this is my life verse and my business priority. All of my goal setting starts with this priority: how can I bring the most glory to the Lord?

I contend – even challenge you – that this (to glorify God) is the TOP priority for any 2%er leader or company.

As my good friend, Arnie McCall, says, our priority as believers is “to make Jesus more famous than your brand.”

4 Keys to Setting Priorities

Without question, Peter Drucker’s four keys to setting priorities from his classic book, The Effective Executive, are the absolute best I’ve ever found. A believer, Drucker teaches us to:

1. Pick the future over the past (or as tell to my keynote audiences, “Invent the future – don’t redesign the past.”)

2. Focus on opportunities rather than problems.

3. Choose your own direction rather than climb on the bandwagon.

4. Aim high for something that will make a great deal of difference rather than something that is safe and easy to do.

Start With Your Priorities

  • What are your priorities for this year?
  • In what ways will you bring glory to God in your business?
  • How will you drive the name of Jesus above your brand?
  • How are you integrating Drucker’s list within your business?

Please share one or more of your priorities below. I’d love to learn what other 2%ers are dedicated to achieve. [If you would like to see my priorities, leave a comment and “convince me” to share them!]

I wrote this last year and decided this was my FOCUS for 2015

    F Find Market (Define Clearly)

O Open Platform (Determine Pathway to Market)

C Concentrate Efforts (Goal & Market Driven)

U Uniform Approach (Little Variation but Adaptable)

    S Success (Accomplished Goals)

    • drjimharris says:

Simply LOVE your priorities, Bill. As you know I coach my clients on carrying their PoD (Point of Dominance) = What piece of what market do you want to OWN? We discussed this before, and I know you are more than on your way to dominating your PoD. (Hey, if 2%ers don’t dominate our markets, Satan will!!!)

      • My point of dominance now is working with my partner Joseph Lee to develop the best and most dominant marketing system for Realtors ever. It is getting very close to launch but has been in the planning stage for over a year. 2015 will allow this system to make Realtors be dominant in their markets.

  • Terrell Davis says:

Looking back over my 2014 journal…I found that I have a tendency to work within my own thinking…to limit my planning to what I know, what I have experienced, or what others have experienced. So…in Drucker’s fist key, as I walk through 2015 I want our company to be able to look back know that the path we took was not one that was originally in our planning (although we plan), but one that God choose for us and we were obedient enough to follow. I have heard some say there is no longer original thoughts or actions, Psalm 139:16 states…”Your eyes saw me when I was formless; all my days were written in Your book and planned before a single one of them began”. As we enter 2015 and choose the future over the past, I want to experience all that God originally planned for me.

    • drjimharris says:

Great start Terrell! Let the Holy Spirit witness to your spirit (Romans 8:16) as to the key priorities. Keep me posted.

  • Darren Shearer says:

Professionally speaking, my top priority is doing business in partnership with the Holy Spirit. This year, I’m focusing on using my spiritual gifts that He has given me to use in business. I don’t want to spend another year relying on my natural abilities in business… or, in any other aspect of my life.

    • drjimharris says:

Yes sir! The Spirit will ALWAYS put you in the right place at the right time – always! I know we will keep in touch as the Lord leads us both this year. Thanks Darren!

  • Paul Sohn says:

Great post Jim! Also, Happy New Year! My priority this year us to soar in every respect so I can better serve our Lord!

    • drjimharris says:

Thanks Paul. Your walk in faith is and will continue to be richly blessed! (Proverbs 28:20)

  • Joshua Flowers says:

My goal is have God intertwined in every aspect of my family, personal, and business arenas. This year has started out rough in most peoples minds but I see it as an opportunity to learn from God. Its my turn to learn something new. As for business side of things I will always have two people out on jobs in case there’s an emergency.

  • Thought provoking. Your title hooked me and you delivered. Well said!
