One Word Focus for 2018

Have you missed me?

Perhaps you’ve noticed that I have not posted in a few weeks. Yes, Christmas and New Year’s had an impact, but something far more profound caused me to pause.

Night Sky 2

The Leading

In early December, my dear friend, Dr. Steve Greene, Executive VP of Charisma Media, mailed me a book to read entitled Deep Work by Cal Newport. Cal challenges us to eliminate distractions that steal our time, energy and focus from the truly deep things we should do. Although his academic approach was not written from a Biblical perspective, nevertheless, some powerful truths jumped off the pages at me.

I am too distracted.

I must focus on my deep work.

But…what IS my “deep work?”

Holy Spirit compelled me to stop what I was doing, go deep, and (re)discover the deep work He has prepared for me.

The Revelation

As I intentionally stopped and focused on Him, the first amazing revelation was the concept of a One Word Focus for 2018. Never before have I considered such an approach. Aren’t we all exhorted to develop 3, 4, 5 or more Big Rocks, strategic priorities, stretch goals…or whatever the current management fad suggests?

My One Word came very quickly.

It came to me as I was in deep communion with Holy Spirit. As soon as I heard this in my spirit, I had an immediate witness: this year, more than anything else, I am to press into the presence my Father, Savior, & Holy Spirit.

Everything else this year is secondary.

The Download Continued

As soon as “Presence” hit my spirit, the next question He asked me was, “What are the benefits of His/our presence?” I had NEVER contemplated this before.

I took my handy pen and journal in hand and began to list all the benefits of His presence including:

  • Power
  • Provision
  • Health
  • Wealth
  • Creativity
  • Innovation
  • Grace
  • Mercy
  • Forgiveness
  • Fire
  • Light
  • Purpose
  • Destiny
  • Vision
  • Fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, etc.)
  • Gifts or the Spirit (wisdom, knowledge, prophecy, healing, etc.)
  • Salvation
  • Transformation
  • Restoration……and many, many more!

Some of additional amazing revelations included:

  • An unction to categorize all the prophetic words spoken over me in the past 5 years, which led to…
  • Revitalized, clear and ordered destiny map, which led to…
  • Series of major actions to eliminate distraction, which led to…
  • Creation of my Vision/Destiny Notebook of words, pictures, and visuals of things yet to come.

You get the picture.

One word from Holy Spirit can transform your life.

Your Weekend Challenge

Since today is Friday, your challenge this weekend is to get alone, get quiet, go deep and ask Holy Spirit for your One Word for 2018. It may not come this weekend, but keep pressing for it will come.

When it does some, please come back and list your One Word below, for it will encourage me as well as the thousands around the world who read these articles.

Thanks waiting my one word for 2018….

  • Jerry Ireland says:

It is very interesting that the senior pastor of Charity Chapel challenged us with that very same concept last week.
Listening for a word for this year.

My wife’s word is – different

    My word is – worshipper

It is good to see some confirmation from the Lord.
    Thank you

  • Sean says:

  • My word for the year is BOLD! Bold faith, Bold action in my business, and so much more. God spoke clearly through that when I took a sabbatical in December, I like to think of it as the “Sabbath of the year” and it was fruitful for sure! I love how you elaborated on your word with Holy Spirit, this weekend I’ll keep pressing and see what else He gives me, thanks, Dr. Jim!

  • Gerry Dagonese says:

Along with the other project, I will take up this challenge. Thank you Dr. Jim!

    • Dr. Jim says:

      Go for it Gerry!

      • Gerry Dagonese says:

Tried as I did to limit to one word, I heard two: bold; and others. I need to boldly take action based on the promises of His word AND for others.

        • Dr. Jim says:

That’s great! The point was to encourage us focus on only THE most important things God wants to teach us. You did it. Two words is fine.

  • John smith says:

My One Word for 2018 is Reposition.

    • Dr. Jim says:

Fantastic John! Favor Fall!!! (Would enjoy seeing your list of what “Reposition” means for you. My list on “Presence” is up to around 50 things and counting….”)

  • Been walking with Holy Spirit in this way for several years.. our 2018 word is OVERFLOW.

Our 2017 word was LAUNCH.. and I’m amazed looking back at all that was launched last year.

    • Dr. Jim says:

Yes! God is a God of abundant overflow (“…My cup runneth over…” Keep us posted Tina.

  • Hi Dr. Jim
I have had a very tough 2 months so my word that comes to mind is “Trust”. Trusting in the Lord for his Promises to come to fruition. So I guess my 2nd word would be Promises. I cannot let go of this word, but there is another and that is Patience. Whilst trusting in the Lord He is asking me to be patient. His time is always perfect.

    • Dr. Jim says:

Cheryl – standing in faith with you. Thank you for sharing.

    • Dr. Jim says:

3 are fine, Cheryl. You’ve narrowed yourself to a core few. One is great – 2 our more work as well. At least now you have fewer lanes to run this year!!!!

  • Helen Wray says:

    My word is courage.

  • I made plans for Saturday morning to sit and pray for the one word. It was cold and I wanted to sit in front of the fire place. I started the fire and began praying and reflecting on God’s abundance of love, grace, and mercy. Still had numerous words and phrases swirling in my head. I noticed my fire went out, which agitated me. Still uncertain of the word, I stood in frustration to get the fire going again and what did I see. On the mantel left over from Christmas, My wife had placed a carving of one word –

I knew that was my one word

  • Vaughn says:

My word for 2018 is New
Thank you so much Dr. Jim! I am a new “follower” of your ministry since hearing you on The Kingdom Driven Entrepreneur podcast!

    • Dr. Jim says:

You are so welcomed Vaughn. So glad to hear you heard the podcast – reassuring that His message through me is indeed resonating with marketplace warriors!

  • louise DeLaurier says:

I’ve gone through a rough year, and God is paring down my life to the essentials. I’m becoming a nothing so to not be in God’s way. I’m choosing to live my word for the year: RELEASE. Anything I need to disown I’ll do it. Paring it down to become weak, so He can be strong.
