A Snapshot of Your Destiny

We overly complicate and convolute our destiny. Yet God often gives us snapshots of our destiny — if we simply take notice.

“The words of Nehemiah the son of Hachaliah. It came to pass in the month of Chislev, in the twentieth year, as I was in Shushan the citadel, that Hanani one of my brethren came with men from Judah; and I asked them concerning the Jews who had escaped, who had survived the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem. And they said to me, “The survivors who are left from the captivity in the province are there in great distress and reproach. The wall of Jerusalem is also broken down, and its gates are burned with fire.” So it was, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned for many days; I was fasting and praying before the God of heaven.” Nehemiah 1:1-4

That’s Just Not Right

Nehemiah lived and served in a citadel, a safe, luxurious, walled and well protected palace.  When he heard of the desolation and brokenness of his home, he was devastated.  Then through his “many days” of prayer and fasting, God gave him His plan …. and Nehemiah’s destiny…. to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem.

In my words, Nehemiah experienced a “That’s Just Not Right” moment.

There are three basic ways to respond to your “That’s Just Not Right” moments.

First, it may be something that is impersonal. This is, when you see or learn of something that is just not right, you may say things like, “Somebody needs to do something about this.” You see the need, but it is not personal enough for you to get involved. This very likely happens to all of us daily.

A second response is more personal. Often these more personal “that’s just not right” moments inspire us to get a little involved, most likely to contribute to the cause. This happens all the time in churches or social programs where we are moved to make a financial contribution. This is good, and we should indeed contribute our treasures to worthy, Kingdom-building causes. But their is a higher level of involvement.

The third level response is a Rocky Balboa punch-to-our-gut, a situation that is so powerful and compelling to our soul and spirit that we immediately jump up and say, “That’s just now right and I’ve got to do something about this!”

These gut punch moments require far more than merely writing a check and forgetting about it. There is something so compelling about the situation that you MUST act – you MUST get directly involved.  In these moments you simply can NOT sit on the sidelines – you jump into the game with more than you treasures. You jump in with your time and talents.

Snapshot of Your Destiny

These are the Nehemiah-type moments where God gives you a snapshot of your destiny!

These snapshots are not always the entire picture, but a piece of a bigger destiny puzzle. Sometimes it is simply taking a step into a new place of experience, involvement or even leadership. Sometimes it is a situation that obviously falls within your destiny, a moment or need that is so clearly a part of your destiny DNA you know you must get involved.

If you do not get involved, you know that you will be in disobedience – even sin – to the Lord. (Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin. James 4:17)
